How PacketDojo works

Investigate a network incident, repair it in your browser, and get feedback on your work.

Browse the labs

Your first network incident

Each incident gives you a symptom, a small simulated network, and a goal. You inspect router state, find the fault, make a configuration change, and check that it works. The simulator grades the result and shows your score and packet evidence. Pro adds worked answer keys.

You don’t need equipment or a local install. The terminal accepts supported router commands, not general shell commands. Desktop or a tablet with a keyboard works best.

YOUR FIRST INCIDENT

The unreachable branch

A branch router can’t reach a service network. Investigate where the path stops.

1. Read the brief

Start on the incident briefing. Read the symptom, objective, topology, and scoring rules. Enter the network when you’re ready to investigate.

2. Investigate and repair

Inspect first, change second. Use the Terminal for supported commands or Configuration for edits. Switch routers with the device selector and use Topology to stay oriented.

3. Submit and learn

Select the affected device and root cause, then click Submit for grading. Network tests check that your repair fixes the fault without disrupting working services. Scores and packet evidence are free; worked answer keys require Pro.

Using the lab workspace

Terminal

Type help to see supported commands. Start with read-only commands like show ip route or show running-config. Command history uses the arrow keys.

Device selector

Choose which router you’re talking to. You can also type connect R2. The prompt tells you your current device.

Configuration

Edit router configuration, review the diff, and save. Unsaved editor changes are not used by the terminal or grader.

Diagnosis & submission

Identify the affected router and failure category, then select Submit for grading. No written explanation is required. Pro adds optional reasoning notes for AI feedback when tutoring is available; those notes do not determine your technical score.

Hints in practice

Ask for a progressive hint when stuck. Each hint or AI request deducts five points, up to 25 per attempt. AI has a daily quota when available and is never needed to solve a lab. Pro’s post-completion reasoning review does not change your grade.

Interview rehearsals

Use practice labs first. Rehearsals have a separate briefing and a start button. Once you begin, the shared timer keeps running until you finish or time runs out. Hints and AI are off.
